LEGALLY BLONDE
Pan-Asian Adaptation of
LEGALLY BLONDE
Director
Legally Blonde premiered in the Fall of 2021 at the Agassiz Theater at Harvard University with the Asian Student Arts Project. It was the first musical on Harvard’s campus to feature an entirely Asian cast. The goal of this adaptation was not to challenge the default notion that non-race-specific musicals exist in white spaces and such characters are represented by white identities. We wanted to challenge these white spaces and ask the question of “Why can’t this be an Asian American space?” “Why can’t these be Asian American identities?”
The production was featured on NBC News and the Harvard Gazette.
“It’s breaking down the narrative that the Asian identity is a singular experience,” Cowperthwaite said. “I think that is something that mainstream art struggles with, in terms of representation”
