Ugly Feelings is a new play by Karina Cowperthwaite that explores the questions of racial belonging in White/Asian American multiracial identities. How can multiracial identity be informed by the racialization of spaces you occupy? How can identity be projected onto you by yourself versus by others? Enter the abstract world of angst, confusion, and teenage fantasy as two mixed-race Chinese American twins navigate growing up in a world where they’ve never quite felt like they belong.
Ugly Feelings was a Hoopes Prize nominated thesis submitted to the English and Theater, Dance Media departments at Harvard University. It was performed at the Loeb Drama Center Experimental Theater in April 2023 directed by Karina Cowperthwaite.
Ugly Feelings is currently being developed as part of Fresh Ink Theater Company’s Development Residency in collaboration with Chuang Stage. A reading was held in March 2025 at the Boston Center for the Arts.
